- Don’t make a huge deal out of it. If you’re stressed out and cranky, your kids will usually pick up on it and act accordingly. Their behavior will usually be better if you are relaxed and having fun. You may have to make some compromises to keep the peace such as letting your energetic daughter’s hair stay straight instead of curling it into because she won’t sit still. Focus on the big picture and don’t sweat the small stuff.
- Make it fun. I always let the kids have a couple “fun pictures” where they get to pick their own pose or props. You get to keep the more serious photos while they get to keep their silly photos. And you may be surprised how you like the candid and silly photos just as much as the posed photos, it really allows your children’s personality to shine. This way everyone wins.
- Be prepared. Schedule your session when your child is generally the happiest. Ensure that your children are well rested and have had their nap. Bringing some snacks, water and a favorite toy or activity along is also a great idea. (Avoid colored snacks or drinks like goldfish or fruit punch)
- Be patient. Relax, and save your sanity by trying not to control your child too much during the photo session. I love photographing families and am aware of age appropriate behavior to expect at different stages. So you don’t need to worry about me being frustrated or upset. The more upbeat we keep it, the better the kids will come across in the photos. And it ensures when they do smile, you are smiling and relaxed as well.
- Have a chat. Talk to your child and prepare them for you are doing. If they are at an awkward smiling phase – it’s a thing right now – have them look in the mirror and see what their “real” smile looks like. Avoid promising treats or snacks during the session, it then becomes the focus of their attention and can make it difficult to get them to engage with me. If a child is feeling shy or not engaging, you will notice I talk to them about their favorite dinner, what they like to do, etc. This often allows them to relax and engage with the session more naturally.
